On moving day, your primary task will be to get the truck loaded as efficiently as possible while still protecting your belongings from damage. Get Your Couch Out the Door
Your couch may be one of the largest and most awkwardly shaped furnishings that you own. Getting it out the door is typically a major chore, but you can simplify this task when you follow few steps. First, if your sofa, loveseat, and chairs have feet on them, remove the feet. You can typically do this by flipping the furnishings over and unscrewing them. Tape the screws to the feet, and place the feet in a properly labeled box. Remove the cushions. Some couches come apart, such as the back of a couch with a reclining mechanism. If possible, take the couch apart. You can do a lot of this work as well as disassembly for other large furnishings before moving day to save time and energy.
Load Fragile Items in a Moving Van First
You understandably want to protect your fragile items from damage on moving day. Not all items can be wrapped and stored in a box for protection. For example, lamps, large vases, potted plants, large pictures and more cannot reasonably be placed in a box. You may also not want your flat screen TV and other electronics loaded into a truck. The night before your moving day, load your fragile items or any other items that require special handling into a rented moving van. This way, they will be protected, and they will not be in the way when you are moving other items out of the home on moving day.
Make Use of Trash Bags
Do not fall into the mental trap of thinking that everything must be loaded into boxes. Trash bags are excellent storage containers that work well for your softer or upholstered items. For example, you can place folded drapes, throw pillows, sheets, bed pillows, shower curtains and more in trash bags for easy handling. After all, you can easily grab the handles of three or four of these lightweight bags in each hand and head out the door. You can even use trash bags and rubber bands to cluster your hanging clothes together. Wrap the trash bag around the bottom of approximately 10 to 20 clothes. Tie the bag at the top, and use a rubber band to secure the hangers neatly together.
